The Prince of Winterfell by Gabriel-Cassata The Prince of Winterfell by Gabriel-Cassata
This painting was inspired by a chapter of A Dance with Dragons from George R.R. Martin's ASOIAF series.

As with most characters in the books, Theon Greyjoy has made some bad decisions and done some terrible things but the chapter 'The Prince of Winterfell' really made me feel for him. Once a confident young lord of the Iron Islands, then tortured and brainwashed into assuming the twisted role of Ramsay Bolton's slave, Reek, now he starts to remember who he really is and suffers with the emotional torment of his former life and the physical torment of his current one.

This is my interpretation of Theon at this particular point in his story.

It's really pretty! I can't help but wonder though, why did you make his hair black?

Thanks a bunch :)

In the books, there's not a ton of physical description for Theon but he is said to be a 'lean dark youth'. Which I interpreted to mean dark hair, as he's caucasian and not dark skinned. And almost all of the existing official ASOIAF art that has been produced of this character, he has stringy dark hair. I think the actor on the TV show has dirty blonde hair so they just went with that. But I tried to only draw influence from the books for this piece.

Ahh, after he becomes Reek in the book, his hair turns white, actually! (Which I think would have gone well with the general colors in your picture, that's why I was wondering). See here awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/…

It's still very pretty regardless though! And in the show his hair seems to turn darker the more Reek he gets anyway, haha.

That's interesting. I may have to go back into the books and try to find some evidence of this. If that's true, Martin doesn't seem to draw much attention to it (at least not as much time as he spends describing Theon's missing teeth and mutilated limbs). But if that's the case, I may go back in and revise.

Thanks for the comments :)

This character put me on emotion roller coaster. At fist I'm kinda sympathy with him since I know what it like to try to earn everyone recognition, then I loathe him, but after what he had suffered, I guess I'm pity him now...

Thanks so much. They're a little battered and mutilated but still fun to paint :)

Yeah :) The worse he looks, the more I adore the work.

Hands are the second hardest thing on human body to draw. Feet are the first.

Completely agree. There's something so painfully tragic about this character that I never thought I'd remotely care about.

I don't think I've ever felt so sorry for a character I so vehemently despised as Theon.  Adding the raven was a nice touch.
